December Radiothon Will Raise Money for Second Fisher House at the Tampa VA

Dec. 18, 2017 (Rockville, MD) – Fisher House Foundation, which provides comfort homes for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers, is being featured the week after Christmas by Tampa radio station WWBA. On December 28, WWBA will host a radiothon to raise money for a new Fisher House at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa.

“We are so grateful for WWBA, and their listening community,” said Dave Coker, President of Fisher House Foundation. “Not only do we greatly appreciate the funds raised, but we also appreciate the visibility we will get throughout the Tampa area.”

Today, there are 73 Fisher Houses across the country, in Germany and the United Kingdom. On any given night, nearly 1,000 families can be staying at a Fisher House. Since the program’s inception, Fisher Houses have provided more than 7 million nights of lodging.

“With the large military population throughout Florida and particularly here in Tampa Bay, we are delighted to help with this very worthwhile cause,” said Steve Kyler, VP of Content, at WWBA. “Fisher House has proven over the years to assist military families with great integrity from the leadership of the foundation. Our team at WWBA and News Talk Florida are grateful to this fine organization. We look forward to an outstanding response from so many of our audience and consumers throughout our radio, web publications and social media platforms.”

Funds raised during the WWBA Radiothon will stay in the local area and go towards a second Fisher House at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa. The new 16-suite home will augment the 20-suite home that is currently there. Since the current Tampa Fisher House is continually at capacity with a waiting list, this second house will allow Fisher House to serve additional military and veterans’ families receiving medical treatment through this rehabilitation center.

“Fisher House Foundation can’t do what we do alone,” said Coker. “The fact that thousands of Americans contributed to making these dreams possible is something all of us should be proud of. Americans do care. And what better time to show that than during the holiday season.”

About Fisher House

Fisher House Foundation is best known for its network of 72 comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, and in Europe, close to the medical center or hospital it serves. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $360 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses, and children of fallen and disabled veterans.
